Q. What causes the smell?

Bacteria are found in everybody’s mouth, and their primary function is to break down proteins found in foods, mucous, and diseased or damaged tissue. As a by product of normal function, the bacteria put out a mixture of sulphur compounds that are foul smelling and are known as Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSCs). The main players are Hydrogen Sulfide and Methylmercaptan (H2S and CH3SH, respectively). Everybody has some level of (VSC’s) and some people have substantially more of these bad breath-causing bacteria than others.
